Veterinary Education in India

Veterinary Education has its roots in ancient India as evinced by treatises in Sanskrit on veterinary subjects such as ‘Hastya Ayurveda’ on elephants and ‘Aswa Pariksha on horses. Modern vet¬erinary practice was introduced in our country with the advent of East India Company in 18th Century.

The first veterinary college was started in Bombay in 1883 followed by veterinary colleges at Lahore, Calcutta, Madras, and Patna. In 1936, Madras Veterinary College introduced the BVSc degree course after a two-year intermediate course in the college. The degree was awarded by Madras University. Another landmark was the introduction of postgraduate programs m veterinary Science which starred in 1958 by the establishment of Post Graduate College of Animal Sciences at; the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnag, Subsequently Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry subjects were starred in some veterinary colleges. Now all 6, states have at least one veterinary college.
Entry into the field
Training in Veterinary science is through the bachelor of Veterinary science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH a five year program. Entry-level is after successful completion of +2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, securing at least 50% marks in aggregate

further studies in Veterinary Science will be in the form of Master’s Degree programs (MVSc – Two years) with the specializations in Anatomy, Animal nutrition, Genetics and Animal Breeding, Animal reproduction, Microbiology, Parasitology, Pathology etc. Minimum eligibility is BVSc qualification.

Veterinary Council of India- Entrance Examination

The Veterinary Council of India conducts an all India entrance examination for filling up 15% of the total number of seats on merit in each Veterinary college in India for the BVSc. & A.H. course.
Eligibility: (a) The candidate must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination equivalent to 10-2 Higher Secondary Examination (after a period of 12 years of study). The last two years of study should be with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and any other elective subject with English. (b) The candidates must have passed the qualifying examination obtaining not less than 50% of the aggregated marks in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. For SC/ST or other special category of students 40% is enough.

Application Form:

AIPVT application registration form can be ordered directly from the Veterinary Council of India by paying a demand draft of Rs 800 (general category) and Rs 400 (SC/ST/PH category) in favor of ‘Veterinary Council of India-Examination Fund’ payable at New Delhi. The demand draft is required to be posted to Office of Controller of Examination, Veterinary Council of India, ‘A’ Wing, 2nd Floor, August Kranti Bhawan, Bhikaji Cama Place, New Delhi -110006.
All candidates need to fill in the application form and send it to the VCI office before the deadline.
